Tucked away in the village of Burton on the edge of Christchurch, The Bear of Burton is much more than a traditional country pub.

We recently had the pleasure of attending this year's annual Bearstival, and it perfectly showcased everything that makes this venue so special. 

As we arrived, we were immediately taken back by the vibrant atmosphere. Colourful bunting stretched across the gardens, live music filled the air and visitors gathered around an array of independent market stalls showcasing everything from handmade crafts to local products.

There was a genuine sense of community throughout the afternoon. Families relaxed together, friends caught up over drinks, and visitors explored the stalls while local musicians created the perfect soundtrack to the event throughout the day. It is exactly the sort of community event that reminds you why independent hospitality venues remain at the heart of local life.

Bearstival has become an annual summer tradition, bringing together live music, local businesses, great food and entertainment in one relaxed setting.

One of the biggest highlights of the afternoon was undoubtedly the food.

The smell of freshly prepared hog roast drifted through the gardens as guests queued for generous sandwiches packed with succulent pork, stuffing and crisp salad. Watching the chefs carving directly from the spit only added to the experience.

The main menu celebrates traditional British favourites, with everything from premium burgers and fresh seafood to quality steaks, handcrafted desserts and one of the area's most popular Sunday roasts. Using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible, the kitchen showcases the very best produce Dorset has to offer.

Alongside the food, drinks flowed throughout the afternoon. There was everything from refreshing summer spritzes to complimentary gin tastings helping everyone settle into the festival atmosphere and creating another enjoyable element to an already memorable event.

Stepping inside The Bear of Burton was equally impressive.

Original features sit alongside botanical décor, cosy lounges, elegant dining spaces and bright, welcoming interiors that feel equally suited to a relaxed coffee, a family lunch or an evening celebration. Every room has been thoughtfully designed, striking the perfect balance between country charm and modern comfort. 

Beyond the restaurant, The Bear also offers a collection of boutique bedrooms, making it an ideal destination for weekend escapes, special occasions or visitors looking to explore Christchurch and the surrounding coastline. What stayed with us most wasn't just the food, the music or the beautiful setting. It was the atmosphere.
