Stompin' on the Quomps | Christchurch's Beloved Jazz Festival on the Quay

There are music festivals built around enormous stages, headline acts and carefully controlled crowds. Then there is Stompin’ on the Quomps: a festival where Christchurch Quay becomes a shared garden, families arrive carrying camping chairs and the sound of saxophones drifts across the water.

Returning for its 30th event in 2026, Stompin’ has grown into one of those rare local traditions that feels inseparable from its setting. It is relaxed, welcoming and proudly independent, a full day of live jazz that asks us to settle in rather than rush between performances.

Stompin’ on the Quomps is not run by a large commercial festival company. It is organised as an independent, non-profit community event, supported by its organising team, volunteers, local businesses, sponsors and visitors’ donations. Admission remains by donation, helping the festival stay accessible to different ages and budgets.

That community-led approach explains much of its character. Stompin’ does not feel like an event temporarily imposed on Christchurch. Instead, it appears to grow naturally out of the town, using a green space that local families already associate with picnics, riverside walks and summer afternoons.

The festival has also required remarkable commitment behind the scenes. Its former chairman spent 25 years helping to lead Stompin’, while today the event continues through a dedicated team and volunteers who help with everything from preparing the site to keeping the festival running throughout the day. 

Anyone who believes jazz requires a quiet concert hall may be surprised by Stompin’. The programme moves through an energetic mixture of smooth jazz, swing, jump jive, Latin influences and jazz funk, featuring musicians from Dorset and further afield.

The music is accomplished, but the experience never feels intimidating. We can listen closely from beside the stage, dance near the bandstand or simply let the performance become the soundtrack to an afternoon with friends.

That freedom is part of the appeal. There is no pressure to understand every musical reference or recognise every performer. We might arrive because we love jazz, because we are looking for a family day out or simply because we have followed the music down towards the quay.

The location does more than provide a backdrop. The Quomps shapes the entire atmosphere of the festival.

Blankets and chairs begin appearing across the grass as visitors create small bases for the day. Children move between the family attractions and open space, while groups share food, collect drinks from the bars and occasionally abandon their seats when the music becomes too tempting not to dance to.

The festival uses both its main stage and Christchurch’s traditional bandstand, allowing performances to continue across the day. Around the edge of the site, food traders, bars, children’s rides and other activities create the feeling of a summer fair without overwhelming the music at its centre.

Later, the experience changes again. The afternoon light softens, the river reflects the sky and the festival gradually moves from family picnic to open-air evening concert. We may have spent hours in roughly the same patch of grass, yet the atmosphere around us feels completely different.

Reaching a 30th event is significant, particularly at a time when independent festivals face rising costs and increasing uncertainty. Stompin’ has endured because it offers something difficult to manufacture: a genuine sense of ownership among the people who attend it.

Visitors are not separated into expensive enclosures, and the day is not built around persuading us to purchase upgrades. Instead, everyone shares the same music, the same riverside view and the same unpredictable Dorset weather.

Stompin’ on the Quomps reminds us that a memorable festival does not always need to be enormous. Sometimes it only needs talented musicians, a committed local team and a town willing to gather on the grass together.
