Coffee, Cars and Community | Fuel & Fable in Christchurch

Tucked away on Reid Street in Christchurch, Fuel & Fable is an independent speciality coffee shop and small-batch roastery built around a love of good coffee, automotive culture and bringing people together.

We visited recently to experience it for ourselves, and what stood out was the attention to detail running through almost everything they do. From coffee roasted on site and carefully considered espresso blends to the automotive-inspired branding, merchandise and regular car meets, Fuel & Fable has created something that feels like much more than another coffee shop.

The combination of cars and coffee makes considerably more sense when you discover the story behind the business. Owner Matt has experience in both worlds.

Before moving into speciality coffee, he worked as a racing instructor, later going on to open what Fuel & Fable describes as the first speciality coffee shop in Bedfordshire. That business developed into an award-winning Icelandic-inspired café before Matt founded his own roastery, sourcing and roasting coffee while continuing to build his experience as a barista trainer and consultant.

His work with coffee has also extended beyond cafés. Matt has worked with prisoners, using coffee and barista training to teach practical and interpersonal skills intended to support rehabilitation and future opportunities.

Fuel & Fable relocated towards the New Forest in 2024, eventually opening its first café here in Christchurch and bringing those different parts of Matt's background together. It means the automotive influence isn't simply a theme created for the brand. There's a genuine connection to both sides of what Fuel & Fable represents.

While the cars might initially grab your attention, coffee is at the heart of Fuel & Fable. The Christchurch café is also a working small-batch roastery, with the team roasting its own speciality coffee on site. And there's an impressive amount of thought behind what eventually ends up in your cup.

Take Highside, Fuel & Fable's signature house blend. It currently combines Arabica coffees from Brazil and Ethiopia, with flavours of dark chocolate, hazelnut, honey and malt.It's been developed as an all-rounder with particular attention paid to espresso, working both black and with milk, and has also received a 2026 Great Taste Award.

Then there's Apex, its seasonal blend, currently combining coffee from Rwanda and Kenya with a lighter roast and notes of milk chocolate, raspberry and cherry.

That attention to detail continues through Fuel & Fable's Brew School, where workshops explore everything from espresso extraction and grinder calibration to origins, processing, roast profiles and milk texture. 

Alongside the coffee is a changing selection of sweet and savoury treats, and we decided to try two: a blackcurrant crumble shortcake slice and a rocky road tiffin.

The blackcurrant crumble shortcake brought a lovely balance of fruitiness and sweetness, while the rich, chocolatey rocky road tiffin was particularly indulgent. Both paired perfectly with the deeper notes of Fuel & Fable's signature espresso, making a coffee and something sweet an easy recommendation from our visit.

If you're heading down earlier in the day, Fuel & Fable also regularly offers breakfast options such as rolls filled with locally sourced smoked bacon which areparticularly tempting on one of their car-meet mornings. Grab a coffee and something to eat before heading outside to see what impressive cars and bikes have arrived.

The coffee may be carefully considered, but the community surrounding Fuel & Fable is just as important to what they’ve created.

Regular car and motorcycle meets have turned the Christchurch café into a gathering place for local enthusiasts, as well as those willing to travel from further afield. On event mornings, the space outside can fill with an eclectic mix of classics, modified cars, performance models, motorcycles and much-loved daily drivers.

The inclusive atmosphere is a big part of the appeal. Some people come specifically to see the cars, others arrive to catch up with familiar faces, and plenty are simply there for a good coffee and something to eat while taking it all in.

Fuel & Fable hosts regular gatherings including Drivers Club, Rev & Roast and Drive Social, alongside collaborations with different clubs and groups from the wider community.

You don't need to know everything about cars to enjoy it, grab a coffee, have a wander around, and get chatting!

The attention to detail doesn't stop with the coffee. Highside, Apex, Flat Out and Downshift are all names within Fuel & Fable's coffee range, immediately giving you a sense of the automotive influence running through the brand.

It's carried through the wider identity too, from the packaging and café itself to the merchandise available to buy.

During our visit, we particularly liked the stickers and hoodies. Alongside freshly roasted beans and brewing equipment, you'll find Fuel & Fable accessories that let you take a little piece of the culture home with you. There's something amazing about finding an independent business with an identity that people want to be part of.
