Shopping in Christchurch: Independent Shops, High Street and Saxon Square

Shopping in Christchurch is less about spending an entire day inside a conventional shopping centre and more about exploring a compact historic town at our own pace.

The High Street provides the main route through the centre, with Saxon Square just off it and Church Street leading towards the Priory and Castle Street. Along the way, familiar retailers sit beside longstanding family businesses, fashion boutiques, galleries, jewellers, food shops and unexpected independent finds.

Most of the central shopping areas are only a few minutes apart on foot, making it easy to browse without repeatedly moving the car.

Christchurch High Street is the natural starting point for a shopping trip. It stretches through the town centre and provides an accessible mixture of independent businesses, cafés, everyday services and recognisable national retailers.

Bookends has been part of the town since 1976 and combines books with artwork, stationery, cards, gifts and coastal home accessories. Nearby, Mathews Shoes has served generations of local families with footwear for women, men and children.

Food shoppers can visit Patisserie Mark Bennett for artisan bread, pastries and cakes or explore specialist treats at The Christchurch Confectioner. Other independents are interspersed with familiar high-street names, making this the most varied part of the town.

The High Street is also a convenient route towards Saxon Square in one direction and the historic streets surrounding Christchurch Priory in the other.

Saxon Square is a pedestrianised, open-air shopping area immediately beside the High Street.

It contains a mixture of national retailers, local services and independent businesses, with level walkways, public seating and cafés making it a convenient place for an unhurried browse.

Christchurch Jewellers is one of its most established independent businesses, offering new, vintage and antique jewellery alongside watches, repairs and valuations. Trove Christchurch adds a more eclectic element, bringing together independent sellers with art, crafts, vintage pieces, gifts and decorative finds.

The square also hosts community activities and seasonal entertainment at different points of the year. Its adjoining car park makes it particularly practical for shorter shopping trips.

Church Street is where Christchurch’s independent shopping scene becomes more distinctive.

Alex & Us and Jaylo’s Boutique offer womenswear, accessories and personal service, with collections ranging from relaxed everyday pieces to polished occasionwear. Azzediari adds further independent fashion and accessories to the street.

Art shoppers can explore contemporary work close to the Priory, while small gift businesses and specialist shops add variety between the boutiques. The historic buildings and view towards Christchurch Priory make this area feel very different from a standard retail development.

Continue around Castle Street to combine shopping with Christchurch’s heritage quarter. From here, it is easy to walk towards the Castle ruins, Norman House, Priory and Quay, turning a shopping trip into a wider day out.

Explore independent fashion and accessories shops in Christchurch

Some of Christchurch’s most worthwhile independent businesses sit beyond the central High Street.

Venture at 36 Bargates sells jewellery, cards, wall art and handmade products from regional makers and creative enterprises. The shop forms part of Linwood School’s CHI programme, helping young people develop practical skills and supported retail experience.

Bargates is only a short walk from the core shopping area, so Venture can easily be incorporated into a town-centre route. It is particularly worth the detour when we are looking for an affordable local gift rather than something mass-produced.

Highcliffe has its own independent high street along Lymington Road and deserves a separate visit rather than being treated as an extension of central Christchurch.

Lauren Matthews Home combines contemporary fashion and accessories with homeware, art prints and gifts. Star Boutique offers womenswear, bags, jewellery and seasonal accessories, while Crystal World Jewellers provides traditional service and distinctive jewellery.

Food options include Shelley’s Bakery and other independent cafés and specialist retailers. Highcliffe Castle Shop also carries locally produced jams, honey and biscuits alongside gifts and souvenirs.

Because Highcliffe is several miles from Christchurch town centre, it is best approached as a second shopping area rather than added to a walking route around the centre.

Roma Italian Delicatessen offers pasta, cheeses, cured meats, wine and freshly prepared dishes. Patisserie Mark Bennett covers artisan bread, cakes and pastries, while The Christchurch Confectioner is the place for chocolates, sweets and edible gifts.

Further towards Mudeford, The Noisy Lobster Deli, Shop and Bakery sells bread, cakes, deli products and seafood beside Avon Beach.

Bookends is the leading independent option for books, cards, stationery and gifts. The High Street and Saxon Square also contain national retailers offering everyday stationery, craft products and affordable books.

Vintage, pre-loved and charity shopping

The town centre has a varied collection of charity and pre-loved shops, particularly around the High Street, Bargates and Saxon Square.

Stock changes constantly, but shoppers may uncover clothing, books, homeware, collectables and furniture. Trove is also worth exploring for vintage and one-off pieces offered by its independent traders.

Christchurch Market takes place every Monday from 9am until 4pm along the traffic-free High Street and in Saxon Square.

The mix of traders can change, but stalls may include fruit and vegetables, food, plants, clothing, bags, household goods and seasonal products. Market day gives the centre a livelier atmosphere and adds considerably more choice to a shopping visit.

The High Street is closed to through traffic while the market operates, and nearby parking can become busier. Arriving earlier in the day generally gives us more time to browse both the stalls and permanent shops.

Several council car parks are within easy walking distance of the town centre:

• Saxon Square Car Park is directly beside the shopping area and convenient for the High Street. It is a short-stay car park with a maximum stay of four hours.
• Wick Lane Car Park is useful for Church Street, Castle Street, the High Street and the Priory area. It is one of the larger central options.
• Bank Close Car Park provides another central choice near the High Street.
• Priory Car Park is well placed for Church Street, the historic quarter, Christchurch Quay and the southern end of the town centre.
• Mayors Mead Car Park is another option for longer visits incorporating the Quay and Priory.
